We all want what’s best for our babies and their delicate skin, and that’s what Lindy Klim wanted too so when she discovered that there wasn’t anything she was happy with she decided to create it herself. I was able to talk to the lovely Lindy, wife of Australian swimming champion Michael Klim, about Milk Baby.
I was inspired and energised hearing about the Milk brand vision and Lindy’s outlook. Take a look at what she shared with us and I hope you will feel the same.
What inspired you to create the Milk Baby brand?
When I was a new mother there were no products available in the market that I felt safe to put on my very young babies skin. I wanted something that was organic and natural but also looked good in the home and hence Milk Baby was born.
The product names are very cute; can you share with us how you came up with them?
The product names really come from our time with our children, for example with the Moisturising Qweam, when Stella was little she couldn’t say cream it was always ‘Qweam’. It’s just little things like that we take and then work in with the brand.
Are there plans to expand the range?
We have just launched 4 new products early this year (Shampoozle + Conditioner, Moisturizing Qweam, Protect Me + Sunscreen and Fairy Detangler) and we are constantly researching new products. We hope to extend the range with two new products later this year. Things never rest at Milk Baby!
There is Milk Baby and Milk & Co, which I believe is Michael’s brand, how connected are they?
When Michael my husband finished swimming we launched the Milk & Co brand with Milk by Michael Klim, this is a marine based men’s skincare range now sold in Coles and Woolworths. It was during the launch of Milk by Michael Klim that I realised there was a need for Milk Baby so I took a lot of his concepts such as the custom designed packaging and went from there.
Since our launch in 2008 we have built the Milk & Co brand into more of a lifestyle range with a food and food supplements range, launching in June and my own women’s range to be launched in early 2013.
How do you manage to juggle the roles of wife and mother with the running of the company?
I need to be very organised. I try to wake up half an hour before my kids so that I can have a shower and get organised before they wake otherwise it is all go. I also make sure that I live in the moment so if we are at home I am spending time with the kids and try not to think too much about work and visa versa. This way I make sure that the time I spend with my kids and at work is quality time.
Have you got a piece of advice you think is invaluable for working mothers?
You can’t do everything so don’t beat yourself up about it! It is still important to make time for yourself. You will find that you look at things on a whole new level when you have had an hour’s piece and quiet to think things through.
How do you relax and unwind?
Exercise. I really find that going to the gym or taking a brisk walk helps clear my mind and get my thoughts in order. I always feel far more relaxed when I am exercising daily.
Do you have any tips you can share with us for new mums to get their body back after bubs is born?
Try and schedule in at least some sort of exercise each day. It doesn’t have to be the gym it can just be a brisk walk around the block. I have been known to strap on the Baby Bjorn some days and do some squats and lunges when the children where very young and I just simply couldn’t get out of the house!
What is next for Lindy Klim?
There are a few things on the go at the moment but I better keep my lips sealed for now. Stay tuned!
What does being a woman mean to you?
A lot of hard work if you ask me! Having babies, working, looking good, cleaning, ironing, do I need to go on?
I think that is one of the best answers to that last answer I’ve had, classic! And honest. Thank you so much for speaking with us Lindy and good luck with the growth of the brand.
I devour books, vampires and supernatural creatures are my genre of choice but over the past couple of years, I have broadened my horizons considerably. In a nutshell – I love to write! I love interacting with a diverse range of artists to bring you interviews. Perhaps we were perfect before – I LOVE WORDS!
