Are you a mother who worries every time they have to leave their child in someone else’s care because they are asthmatic and may have an attack?
Does it concern you that someone else looking after your child may not effectively administer their medication?
Ms Alita Howlett, founder of BelloAlito, is one such mother and she recognised that the absence of a child friendly asthma management package has been putting many children at risk.
She set about developing a system that would assist with better asthma management in children and reduce the potential for incorrect administration of medication through the lack of an efficient, effective means of communication between parents and anyone else responsible for the care of their children.
MyAsthmaBag has been developed by Ms Alita Howlett to provide parents with a child friendly, fun solution that is easy and safe for use by anyone looking after their children.
Over 400 Australian’s die each year from asthma related illnesses, which just seems like a lot to me. A vital component of helping prevent potentially fatal asthma attacks is accurate communication about medication required and the procedures for child asthma sufferers.
Ms Howlett explains: “The lack of a main communication hub between parents and temporary guardians while caring for children suffering from asthma has long been a problem. Carers constantly run the risk of administering either too little or too much medication and there is often no way of knowing when medication is running low, the specific requirements for each child or emergency instructions for guardians who are unfamiliar with a child’s medical history in an emergency.”
“Most children take their medication with them in a lunch box or a plastic bag which doesn’t protect their equipment, encourage them to use it properly or provide anyone else with the appropriate instructions in the event of an attack. I developed the MyAsthmaBag to act as a personal soft pack for kids to hold everything that they or their carers could possibly need to accurately care for and monitor a child’s asthma.”
Sophie Howlett, Ms Howlett’s daughter, is living proof that the MyAsthmaBag is an effective and innovative solution. Since she started using her own MyAsthmaBag in early 2009 she has not been admitted to the hospital. Due to it’s proven results and her strong belief in it’s worth Ms Howlett is launching the product onto the market. Ms Howlett believes asthma management plans and logbooks are necessary and argues that if they were more widely used the results would be less GP visits, less hospitalisation and fewer absences from school for children.
“Having an asthma action plan from your doctor is extremely important as it details your medication needs, says what to do when your asthma gets worse and when to seek medical help which is beneficial for both parents and carers,” said Ms Howlett. “I believe that MyAsthmaBag will finally give parents the tools they need to accurately and effectively implement a GPs asthma management plan for their children.”
The innovative design of MyAsthmaBag ensures that the first thing you see when you open the bag is medical instructions and the photo identification on the side means that teachers and guardians who may be caring for multiple sufferers at the same time can quickly and easily access the correct medication.
The log book is a very important element of the MyAsthmaBag because it means there is a constant flow of communication between parents, carers and GPs allowing accurate health assessments. Ms Howlett believes this is crucial to keeping children out of the emergency ward.
